Normally I treat the birthers, militia types, "sovereign citizens", and the like with the snarky humor their claims deserve.
Not this time. Because this one isn't funny at all.
Many of you remember the videos of "July4Patriot" on YouTube, like this one from 20 February 2009
or this one from 29 March 2009
or this one in support of Dr. Orly on 20 July 2009.
Known for a skull mask covering half his face, and sometimes showing himself wearing a USMC dress uniform, "July4Patriot" posted videos of armed militia training and rants about Obama and the so-called "New World Order", with calls for patriotic revolution, also running the so-called "American Resistance Radio" and the "American Resistance Movement". He was also a member of the "Oathkeepers" and "Tea Party" movement.
So why am I writing about him?
Because "July4Patriot", AKA Charles Dyer, is currently behind bars on a single charge of rape and unlawful possession of a military grenade launcher.
"Dyer has been charged with first degree rape. When police searched Dyer's home for evidence on that charge, they found a grenade launcher that matched the description of one of three that were reportedly stolen from an Army post in California.."
To be precise, well, read the report for yourself:
"An ex-military man has been arrested on charges of rape of a child and forcible sodomy.
Charles Alan Dyer, 29, of Marlow, was arrested Tuesday afternoon by Stephens County Sheriff’s deputies, said Sheriff Wayne McKinney. Dyer served in the United States Marines in Iraq.
McKinney said charges included first degree rape and two counts of forcible sodomy. It is expected the charges will be formally presented in Stephens County District Court today, McKinney said."
A charge of not just rape, but rape of a child. And weapons charges tp boot.
"Crooks and Liars" is covering this story as well. And his buddies are claiming (not surprisingly) a setup and are collecting money to help what they call the "First POW of the 2nd American Revolution" and videos to support him
It's interesting to note that the "Oathkeepers" seem to be scrubbing their site as well to remove any reference to Dyer.
So let me make this clear:
I believe that Dyer deserves a fair trial in front of a jury. I believe he deserves to be defended properly, In other words, I believe he deserves everything that our US Constitution and US law calls for under the concept of innocent until proven guilty.
And should he be found guilty, if the evidence shows that he did indeed rape a child, then I believe he should spend the rest of his miserable life behind bars.
Personally I believe in torture for those convicted of child molestation. But that's me, not the US legal system. And Dyer is entitled to a fair trial - and whatever results from said trial.
Update - 14 April 2010 - According to the Duncan Banner, Tea Party "July4Patriot" Charles Alan Dyer has been found not guilty of a charge of possession of a grenade launcher.
"A jury in a federal courtroom Tuesday returned after several hours with a not guilty verdict for Charles Alan Dyer, who was charged in January with a federal complaint of possession of a grenade launcher.
The complaint was filed by Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Agent Brett Williams, following a search on Dyer’s premises east of Marlow on an unrelated charge by Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney and deputies. "

"The federal indictment alleged that Dyer was found to be in a possession of a Colt M-203, 40-millimeter grenade launcher on Jan. 12. The weapon was not registered to Dyer in the National Firearms Registration and Transfer Records, according to the court documents filed in January.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database had the grenade launcher listed as a stolen weapon in 2006, from Fort Irwin, Calif.. It is allegedly one of three that were stolen from the military base and is not known if the other two have been recovered.
Had Dyer been found guilty and convicted, he could have faced up to 10 years in a federal prison and a fine of up to $10,000. "
However, again according to the Duncan Banner, Charles Dyer is now in Stephens County to face one charge of child sexual abuse.
"Dyer was found not guilty in a federal courtroom by a jury late Tuesday following a two-day trial on charges of possession of a grenade launcher.
Stephens County had a hold on Dyer to be transferred back to the county to face one charge of child sexual abuse that was filed Jan. 20, in Stephens County District Court. Late Tuesday, Assistant District Attorney Josh Creekmore said Dyer was scheduled to appear in county court 9 a.m. today for his initial arraignment. It isn’t known if a bond will be set. McKinney said there will be extra security at the courthouse.
He was originally arrested on that charge Jan. 12, and during that investigation by the county sheriff’s office, the federal charge was filed. "
21 November - Two about Charles Dyer, aka "July4Patriot".
Dyer was, for those who remember, the militia person and former Marine who did videos of him in his Marine uniform and a half-skull mask calling for the overthrow of the US government. In January of 2010 he was arrested on weapons charges and child rape. The weapons charges were later dropped. However, two updates on the latter one.

"At the courthouse, Charles Dyer, 29, was also seen on the grounds of the building outside. Dyer is free on bond regarding a felony child sexual abuse charge, after allegations were made against him in January. Dyer faces a trial in January 2011 on that charge.
During that investigation, Dyer was found to be in possession of stolen military property, and appeared in federal court on separate charges. Dyer was found not guilty in a federal courtroom by a jury in April following a two-day trial on the charges of possession of a grenade launcher.
Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney said today that he could not comment on the hearing this morning, but noted that the Federal Bureau of Investigations was involved. SCSO deputies along with Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers were visible around the courthouse which was in a semi-lockdown status.
Dyer and members of a militia he is involved with were waiting outside the courthouse, Dyer said.
Dyer had called The Banner around Oct. 14, and at that time indicated he was upset, but details were sketchy, as he was under a court order which prevented him from talking about any non-criminal child hearings or issues. Judge Carl LaMar also said that no comment could be made in regards to any matters involving a non-criminal juvenile hearing."

At 3:00 PM today, custody of the child was given back to her mother under the stipulation that she leave the state of Oklahoma immediately and that her child never have communication with me forever. Yes, even after I am found not guilty in a court of law. DHS gets to decide who is guilty and who is not. Never mind those pesky not guilty jury verdicts. But the most important thing is that the child has been released and is now safe with her mother. She is at this time, being escorted out of the state by 2 unmarked vehicles.
I will give more details to this story in the morning. I will say however, that the militias involvement in this case is the reason that she was returned today and not after the adjudication hearing."
Hopefully the child - and her mother - are better off and safer now.

UPDATE - 27 April 2011 - KOCO-TV reports that deliberations could start in the child abuse case.
"An Oklahoma jury could begin deliberations on Wednesday in a case of severe child abuse.
Charles Dyer is charged with sexually assault in an incident involving a 7-year-old girl last year.
The girl testified in a closed courtroom about what happened"
UPDATE - 28 April 2011 - The judge declares a mistrial in the Charles Dyer case.
"A Stephens County child molestation trial has ended with a mistrial. Charles Dyer's jurors told the judge they were hopelessly deadlocked shortly before eleven o'clock Thursday night in Duncan.
They deliberated for more than seven hours. Before they returned to court the final time, the foreman told the judge they had reached a verdict, but one juror changed their mind on the way to the courtroom. Prosecutors say they plan to re-try the case as soon as August.
Charles Dyer told 7News he could not comment at this time. The family of the little girl he's accused of molesting was visibly upset, but said a mistrial-trial is better than a not-guilty verdict."
And his former wife is, quite frankly, scared of him:
"A former marine and known member of anti-government militias has been on trial since Monday for molesting a little girl.
Now, the man's estranged wife, a woman who says she's in fear for her life, is speaking out about her husband.
She says she is just coming to realize everything her husband has been involved in, from being in a militia to having a stolen grenade launcher, and now, she believes, a child molester.
"I'm scared of him even if he is locked away," Valerie Dyer said. "Am I scared of his followers? Yes."
UPDATE - 17 AUGUST 2011 - Charles Dyer skips bond after his home is burned down.
17 August - On 21 January 2010 I wrote an article about Charles Dyer aka "July4Patriot", an former Marine, "Oathkeeper", militia member, tea party member, and birther. Known for his half-skull mask and his old USMC dress blues, Dyer was in jail awaiting charges of possession of a grenade launcher and the alleged rape of a 7-year old family member.
He was acquitted on the weapons charges, and on 28 April 2011 a mistrial was declared in the sexual assault charges. He was released on bond at that time.
Well, he missed a court date, and is now the object of a $500,000 bond payment and nationwide manhunt. His house burned to the ground last Friday and his family doesn't know where he is.
"An ex-marine and Oklahoma militia man sparks a nationwide manhunt. Law enforcement leaders say they're afraid he is heavily armed and will do something drastic.
Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney says Charles Dyer didn't show up for court Monday morning on charges he raped a 7-year-old family member.
But Dyer's family says he is a constitutional patriot that's been hounded by the government and is now left with few options."
I have posted the PDF of the email he left his attorney here. Email addresses have been redacted. In it, he expresses his belief he was being framed for the arson of his house and that Law Enforcement was pushing him "to take violent action".
"I have been pushed to the limits multiple times by law enforcement and the judicial system in an attempt to cause me to take violent action against them. If I do, I know I will be the monster they depict me as."

"Our judicial system is nothing more than a system of liars and crooks working under the color of the law, where the rick go free and the poor are made to suffer injustice. Something MUST be done to expose it."
(Snip) And he ends with: (Bold face mine)
"To my parents, I am sorry I have disappointed you with my actions, I will continue to do all that I can to save the farm. If you do not hear from me within 90 days, then I am dead and I have failed you. I only pray that you will forgive me one day. I love you both with all of my heart. To my sister, I thank you for making me feel like the most loved little brother on the planet. I already miss all of you."
I think I can see why Law Enforcement is really freaking worried about this guy being on the loose.
16 August - KFOR-TV also reports on Dyer.
"Lawmen are searching for him and they're sending out an alert about his ties to anti-government militia groups.
Known for posting anti-government YouTube videos, the self-proclaimed patriot has tried to paint his charges as a conspiracy of the federal government.
Dyer is charged in Stephens County with sexually abusing a child.
He has also been in federal court for possession of a stolen military grenade launcher.
Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney said, "What concerns me is his ties with some of these very radical groups."
Dyer's online rants include some scary messages calling for armed resistance against the U.S. Government and he has invited viewers to join him at his makeshift training area.
The threats of violence turned local too.
McKinney says Dyer has posted messages stating, "If the sheriff's office came to his house, he was loading his weapons and putting his bullet-proof vest on and having a showdown with us."
To make matters worse, there's something they didn't find in the ruins of his house.
"McKinney is afraid a firefight is what Dyer wants, but it won't be at Dyer's house.
His home burned to the ground early Friday morning.
When investigators sifted through it, they didn't find any of his personal belongings or his stash of weapons."
And they have a suspect in the arson:
"Dyer's girlfriend, Monica Freeman, is now behind bars for arson connected to the house fire."
This has gotten "bad" written all over it.
17 August - Talking Points Memo also reports on Dyer.
"On Monday, Dyer was scheduled to appear in court for the beginning of the new trial, but did not. His bond was revoked, and the judge issued a $500,000 bench warrant for his arrest.
In a bizarre twist, Dyer's house burnt down on Friday -- and his girlfriend was arrested for suspected arson, according to KFOR News.
"We're sure he's going to be armed," said Stephens County Sheriff Wayne McKinney of Dyer. "There's no doubt about that."
McKinney also said that Dyer had begun posting messages threatening local law enforcement: "If the sheriff's office came to his house, he was loading his weapons and putting his bullet-proof vest on and having a showdown with us."
"What concerns me is his ties with some of these very radical groups," McKinney said."
I suspect he's got good reason to be concerned.
17 August - The Hinky Meter reports on Dyer.
"On page 2 of the email Dyer then begins to insinuate that the trailer he was living in last Friday may have been burned to the ground due to someone who was trying to “take his life” and “destroy his life’s work”. Apparently his life’s work was to create a bunch of videos where he is stating “what they have done to him”. Fortunately, he’s got a butt-load of those up on youtube and all the government-hating militia folks can create him a youtube shrine and worship his statements as truth until the cows come home.
The problem with Dyer’s story here, and the reason that I’m blatantly showing NO compassion for his alleged “loss” in this fire, is that his girlfriend was arrested for starting the damned the fire. Please note that the reason that his girlfriend was arrested is not due to the feds “planting evidence” against her, or any great big phat conspiracy theory, but because Dyer’s roommate, another man who lived at the trailer, WALKED IN ON HER EARLIER FRIDAY ATTEMPTING TO START A FIRE IN THE TRAILER. She told the man to GET OUT, because she HAD JUST SET THE TRAILER ON FIRE. He successfully put the first fire out and ran her off. She apparently returned later in the morning and burned the trailer to the ground.
…surprisingly this occurred AFTER, as far SCSO has stated, DYER GOT ALL HIS STUFF OUT.

19 October - Charles Dyer aka "July4Patriot" is getting another attorney.
"The trial of a Marlow man accused of child sexual abuse and concealing stolen property has been rescheduled.
Stephens County District Attorney Jason Hicks told the Lawton Constitution the attorney for Charles Dyer has withdrawn from his case and his new lawyer has asked for more time to prepare. "
He also wrote a new letter on 16 October 2011 (scribd link here) In it, he's repledging his troth to the Oathkeepers - who really don't seem to WANT him.
"I swore on the very battleground that the war for our independance started on that I would give my life if need be to insure that my posterity could enjoy the freedom that God granted them and the founders of this great nation attempted to secure. I stood with hundreds of my brothers andsisters as we gave birth to a fledgling organization known as Oathkeepers.
Since that day, I have had the pleasure of watching it grow. I have watched through good times and bad. Even as it has been labeled as a right-wing extremist, seditious, militia organization. Many people are bothered by these allegations but I find a simple pride in it. Not because there is any truth to these outrageous claims but because Oathkeepers is seen as enough of a threat to tyranny to spend resources to counter it. Enough so that these lies have bee nspread on mainstream media by the SPLC and other groups attempting to defame Oathkeepers’ true intent and mission."
This is before he starts to beg for their help.
"Normally a warrant would be issued and they wait for you to turn up somewhere. This is another instance that should raise questions because aFederal warrant was issued and a nationwide manhunt involving 10 law enforcement divisions, including the FBI, began"
Well, you were known to be armed, you associate with groups who dislike the law and law enforcement, and had a vendetta against the government. Not to mention having been accused of child rape. Gee, I wonder WHY they went looking for you.

20 April 2012 - "Oathkeeper" Charles Dyer, aka “July4Patriot.” has been found guilty in an Oklahoma court of raping his daughter.
"In the end, the antigovernment rhetoric that so energized his defense couldn’t save Charles Dyer, the former Marine and member of the antigovernment Oath Keepers organization accused of raping his own daughter. Late Thursday, after four hours of deliberation, a Duncan, Okla., jury convicted Dyer and recommended a 30-year sentence.
After the verdict was read, Dyer’s hands and feet were bound in chains. His face hardened and he did not mutter a word. The only claims of innocence had come earlier as he testified. “I believe in my heart that my daughter is a victim of sexual abuse. … [But] I’ve never hurt anyone in my life, especially not my daughter,” Dyer said.
The case drew national attention after Dyer failed to appear in court for trial in 2010. (At the time of his arrest, he was also charged with possessing a grenade launcher stolen from the military in 2006; he was later acquitted of that charge.) Dyer became infamous when he went on the lam and began issuing threatening, conspiracy-laced communiqués that left no room for doubt as to his violent intentions were police to catch up with him."
Not surprisingly, the "Oathkeepers" and other groups of their ilk want nothing to do with him.

There hasn’t been a word from the Oath Keepers since Dyer’s conviction, and when this trial began, only one supporter remained — Rick Light, head of a militia group in Texas.Since he was arrested, there has been some confusion over just how active Dyer was in the Oath Keepers. The group had worked hard to put distance between itself and the case, with Oath Keepers’ founder Stewart Rhodes — a Yale Law School graduate and former aide to U.S. Rep. Ron Paul — insisting that Dyer was not a “dues-paying” member. Yet videos online, part of a series meant to highlight the Oath Keepers’ more important members, identify Dyer as the group’s official liaison to the U.S. Marine Corps."

Being a former Marine, I have a huge problem with someone ranting while in uniform...rant in your civies if something bothers you that much but don't disgrace the Corps.
I also have a huge problem with people ranting behind masks...if you have the huevos to say it on you tube, have the huevos to show your face so your mamma knows its "you" being stupid.

Mike - From what I understand reading more about Dyer, the Marines ended up booting his rear out last spring due to his rants. There were claims of a court martial too, though I can't find out if he was convicted, it was just a story, or if the USMC said "sign here and we'll process you out under a general discharge, or argue and we'll go to court martial."

Great post with all the links and sources Patrick. I'm totally not surprised about July4Patriot, but definitely disgusted hearing the story. I have a sick feeling that we'll be seeing lots more of these types of stories popping up as the crazies become more and more agitated.
While I'm very saddened for the young girl and her family involved if those rape charges are proven true, I'm also relieved that this crazy person is now off of the streets before he used those weapons to do more harm to more people.

If this is true, how can a person take away a child's innocence? How can he afford to deprive a child of her youth? How can he inflict that harm to a child who will bear a damage psyche forever? Jeremy - I've reported on Dyer before. Considering he's called for open rebellion and military coups, (including while he was still wearing the uniform of the United States Military AND serving in said military) and since he's got connections to the militia movements, I can well believe that he may have.....borrowed some military gear along the way.
As for the other charge, as I said, I hope he gets a fair trial under the laws and Constitution of the United States of America. If he's found innocent, so be it. If guilty, then may he get exactly what he deserves.
He's no "POW of the 2nd American Revolution" though. Nor is he a patriot.

If you knew what the US government was up to, you'd be rebelling too. The abuses of the Bush era didn't go away when Obama was elected, they just took a more media-friendly form. I was rooting for Obama until I saw that nothing had changed. The conspiracy theories these guys are talking about --- I'm living them.

Well there are codes in many places against posting flyers or sticking them on cars. I have on many occasions called the police on people who refused to observe local ordinances in my neighborhood. That isn't because I am part of some secretive organization bent on world domination and the suppression of political dissendents. It is because I get really tired of seeing "Lose Weight Now: Call 555-000", "Laptops starting at $250. Call: 555-000", "Make $5000 a week working from home!!!" signs stappled to telephone polls (which by the way causes them to decay faster and is a danger to workers that have to climb those) and posted everywhere in my community.
I live in a gated community, in which we all agree to certain standards when we move in. There is not a whole lot you really can't do, except post flyers everywhere, solicit door to door, and let your dog off a lease.
As to Skeletor the Marine, well sometimes crazy people do really bad things. Sometimes they are really political (to the point of calling for violent overthrow) because they are already crazy.

Wow. You are the very definition of the tin-foil hat paranoid! I'm just stating a fact, not trying to mock you. I'm just saying that I don't buy into a lot of that paranoia/conspiracy stuff and hey, if that's your thing, knock yourself out. I couldn't have cared less about these issues before I was targeted. Now it's my life.
They can get away with what they're doing because of reactions like yours. I'm not accusing you of anything, I'm just pointing out that we're the perfect targets for government experimentation because we've already been discredited. They can do whatever they like and nobody will believe us.

No, I'm not "out to get you". LOL! If you seriously think that is the case, then yes, you are being too paranoid!
I'm not saying that shady things don't happen. I just have a hard time believing that a lot of the paranoia out there is credible. No, I'm not denying that there is perhaps a grain of truth in these things and there is always a reason to have a healthy skepticism.
But having a healthy skepticism means being skeptical not only of government actions but also purported stories, rumors and seemingly tall tales by people too. Which means I'm not just going to take your word for things either. I checked your link. It just sounds like the usual stuff on the topic to me.
Maybe I wasn't looking in the right areas on your site, but I found a lot of stuff about being paranoid, but couldn't really seem to find anything that gave concrete examples of WHY you feel targeted and that these things are happening. So sorry, but it sounds more like fiction than reality to me.
I seriously hope no one is "targeting you", but as I said, I looked and still don't have a clue what you mean by that and therefore, I have no more reason to take your claims seriously than to think that you are either imagining things or making mountains out of mole hills.

To say that you don't know what it means to be "targeted" is pretty amusing... ask any law enforcement officer or real journalist.
I believe based on the timing of my targeting, I was singled out for being vocal in my opposition to Bush.
I see this site was started up in the safety of the wake of Obama's inauguration. It's very easy and comforting to be anti- whoever's not in power. You'll find lots of fair-weather friends to agree with you.
We'll see what happens in a few years, when Republicans seize power again. Some of the people commenting in this thread may be shrieking about the tactics being used against them, and nobody will believe them. Maybe some of you will be accused of criminal activity, even child molestation, through whispering campaigns, and you'll come to understand why it's the mark of a weak mind to spread poisonous rumors about other people - even if the rumor is "the authorities say he's evil".
The right time to care about government abuses is before the government sets its sights on you. After that, it's too late.

No, I personally DON'T know what it means to be "targeted" as you indicate. Why, because I haven't been. That in no way indicates that others haven't been targeted, but only states that I have no personal experience with such and hope to never have to. If you can't understand that not everyone is "targeted"...then yes, you ARE being too paranoid.
As I mentioned, I still haven't been able to ascertain what exactly you claim happened to you and why you feel targeted. You don't seem to want to answer that question directly and therefore, why am I to take your statements with any more credibility than every other anonymous internet rumor and fear mongering out there. I have no basis to believe you and I'm trying to be fair and give you a chance to explain what you're talking about, because I just don't see it.
Of course we should all care about government abuses and the time is to stop them before they happen. However, there are a lot of people out there who seem to make up abuses or chase shadows that aren't there, so I'll remain concerned with real, actual abuses that someone can show me credible, tangible evidence of. I'm not going to chase shadows or buy into hypothetical scenarios that seem to have no more basis than in fiction or people's personal fears in their own mind.
