In today's dispatches, the GOP seems unwilling to get the stink of birther off of themselves. Dr. Orly figures the best way to get what she wants is to threaten federal judges, attorneys, political party leaders, media heads, and anyone else she doesn't like.
It's starting to look like 2008 again, as the birthers start to dust off the moldy oldies of birtherdom. Jerome Corsi tries to sit the media down to a dramatic reading of The Postman's Tale. The problem is that nobody outside of World Nut Daily and birtherstan seems willing to accept hearsay evidence as anything other than "yeah, so?"
Dr. Orly can't seem to understand the bromance between Corsi and Arpaio. President Barack O'Bama lakes a wee bit o' the olde potshot against the birthers. And movie producer turned failed PUMA Bettina Viviano makes a reappearance in birtherstan, with more moldy oldies from the 2008 election.
13 March - Mediaite comments on the GOP's continued flirtation with the birthers.
"Bashir reminded viewers that unlike Stearns, Obama’s chief rival in 2008 actually pushed back against the conspiracy theorists. John McCain famously told a supporter who believed Obama was an Arab that he was a good American who he simply had political differences with. Bashir asked S.E. Cupp why Republican leaders like John Boehner aren’t publicly condemning birthers, or at least telling them their information is inaccurate. Cupp said it’s because that’s not their job, adding that voters will ultimately decide whether birthers in Congress will keep their jobs or not. Bashir argued that sitting members of Congress should be held to a certain standard, and if a party member makes an objectively absurd statement as Stearns did, he should be publicly rebuked by the leadership.
Cupp shot back that members of the Democratic party have made similar eyebrow-raising statements in the past. Julian Epstein disagreed, pointing to when MoveOn.org infamously called General David Petraeus “General Betray-Us” and some Democrats came out and condemned it. Cupp said that it’s only been a smattering of Republicans that have waded their toes into the birther pool, but Epstein said it’s been a surprisingly large number of Republicans who have shared birther leanings. Epstein suggested that the Republicans risk hurting their chances among independents if their members keep saying things like this about the president."

19 March - During the Corsi and Arpaio muppet show on the first of March, one of the claims was of a "Government Worker" to claims to have been introduced to Obama as a "foreign student" at the house of Bill Ayers parents.
At the time it was suspected that Corsi was referring to a 25 September 2009 story by one Stephen Diamond in regards to the claim by a retired postal worker, Allen Hulton, Part of the Diamond version had this section:
"Mr. Obama explained that he had taken the train out from Chicago to visit the Ayers’ in order to thank them for their help with his “education.” At this time, Mr. Obama had recently graduated from Columbia and would soon enter Harvard Law School. Hulton and Obama “spoke for a few minutes, first chatting about the Ayers family,” Hulton said. Hulton said he did not learn whether the help Obama received from the Ayers’ was financial or in some other form."
Here's a problem. Obama graduated Columbia in 1983, but didn't enroll in Harvard until 1988.
Well, both swift boat liar Jerome Corsi AND Jack Cashill of the American Stinker have articles, and yes, it's Allen Hulton alright.
19 March - First, the Corsi World Nut Daily article:
"Allen Hulton, who was commended for 39 years of honorable service with the USPS, has given a sworn affidavit to investigators commissioned by Maricopa County, Ariz., Sheriff Joe Arpaio to determine whether Obama is eligible for Arizona’s 2012 election ballot. Hulton has recorded about three hours of video interviews with WND.
Hulton says that in conversations with Mary Ayers while on his route he learned of the couple’s enthusiasm and support for a black foreign student. One bright, warm Chicagoland day, he recounts, he met the student who fit Mary Ayers’ description in front of the Ayers home in Glen Ellyn, Ill. That young man, Hulton is convinced, was Barack Obama."

"He says that Mary Ayers told him the student’s name, but that it was a “strange name” that he could not remember, even though at the time it sounded African to him.
“I was taken aback by how enthusiastic she was about him,” Hulton says. “And I believe she said he was from either Kenya or Indonesia, and I favor Indonesia in my recollection.”
I'm distinctly smelling something fishy here.
"About a year after discussing with Mary Ayers the foreign student she and her husband were supporting, Hulton recalls meeting a young black male on the sidewalk in front of the Ayers home.
Hulton describes the man as being in his early 20s, noting that he was tall, thin, had a light complexion and that his ears stuck out.
“He greeted me,” Hulton says. “He was very polite, dressed nicely, but informally – slacks and a dress shirt – and he spoke with no accent. Immediately this young black man entered into conversation with me. He told me he had taken the train out from Chicago and had come to thank the Ayers family personally for having helped him with his education.”
All the article says is that Hulton ran this route from "late 1986 to 1997" So we can't pinpoint the date. However, I will note that at the press conference, the claim was that his man was INTRODUCED to Barack Obama, not that he "met a man that he was later convinced was Barack Obama."
In addition, there's nothing in the World Net Daily article that links the "foreign student" the Ayers were supposedly helping, and Barack Obama, as one and the same person.
The smell of seafood past its prime is getting a lot stronger.
"Hulton remembers asking the young man what his plans were for the future.
“He looked right at me and told me he was going to be president of the United States,” Hulton says.
“There was a little bit of a grin on his face when he said it – he sounded sure of himself, but not arrogant. I know how people will say things because they have an ambition, but it did not come across that way,” Hulton says. “It came across as if this young black male was telling me he was going to be president, almost as if it were the statement of a scientific fact that had already been determined, as if his being president had been already pre-arranged.”
Hulton says the claim made him speechless.
“I kind of stuttered a response and said that nowadays anything is possible. I wished him good luck with his ambition,” he says."
I'm marking this because I want to come back to it in a minute.
"Immediately, Hulton associated the young black man with the foreign student Mary Ayers had mentioned to him so enthusiastically about a year earlier.
“I remembered the conversation I had with Mary, and I associated this young man with the foreign student she had discussed with me, because Mary said they were supporting this foreign student, and the young black man I met outside the Ayers’ home said he had come to Glen Ellyn to thank the Ayers in person for helping him with his education.”
So HULTON supposedly made the connection, not that the Ayers told him Obama was the "foreign student" in question??
Hearsay evidence is hearsay.
“The facial and physical characteristics, as well as candidate Obama’s voice, matched that of the young black male I met in front of the Ayers’ home,” Hulton says in the affidavit he signed Nov. 12, 2011, for Sheriff Arpaio’s Cold Case Posse investigation.
“I am positive that the black male I spoke with in front of the Ayers’ house that day was indeed a young Barack Obama.”
Again, nothing to link this supposed "foreign student" with Obama though.
The fishy smell is getting quite rank.
So what did the Corsi-led "Cold Case Posse" find?? Well, they didn't bother to contact the State of Hawaii to confirm anything. They didn't bother contacting any non-Corsi approved source to confirm anything. But they DID manage to contact the postman of Bill Ayer's parents.
Really?? Is this the best they could do??

The dramatic music doesn't add much to it. However, at about 2:05 an interesting exchange happens.
Corsi - "Do you recall the conversation in the early 1990′s with Mary?" (Mary Ayers)
Hulton - "Yeah. One day she came up to the door when I, um when I came up to the house with mail. And, uh, after a greeting, she started talking to me enthusiastically about this young black student that they were helping out and she referred to him as a "foreign student", and he had a strange name, she mentioned it, I didn't remember it at the time."
At 2:47, Corsi asks if Hulton ever met the "foreign student". Hulton says that he doesn't know if it was some months or a year later, but there was a "young black man" he met near their house.
Why is this interesting?? Because Corsi states this conversation was in the "early 1990's".
Barack Obama graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991, and accepted a two year fellowship at the University of Chicago Law School, which lead to twelve years teaching at that school.
So in other words, it's highly unlikely that Obama was a student during the time these encounters supposedly took place.

"9. In the early 1990s, I spoke with Mary Ayers who told me she was impressed with a foreign, black student. I do not recall from what country she said he was. I recall that the student had an unusual, foreign sounding name. Mary stated Thomas Ayers was helping this student through school financially."
In the early 1990's, Barack Obama would have been graduating from law school and wouldn't be a student anymore. Not to mention the fact that it goes against the same claim from Hulton in 2009 when he said this meeting took place in the 1980's.
Pikes Place Market doesn't smell like fish as much this claim does. A tidal flat at low tide doesn't smell like fish as much as this does. A Star Kist packing plant doesn't smell like fish as much as this does.
19 March - As for Jack Cashill, one of the first things he does is kiss Corsi's hindquarters.
"A few days ago I got a call asking whether I knew anything about the Ayers family mailman. I had heard of him, I said. I remembered liberal blogger Steven Diamond having interviewed the fellow a few years back, but I paid it little mind, as the information seemed too limited to pursue.
The caller then sent me a video interview with the mailman by WND sleuth Jerome Corsi. The video made me sit up and pay attention. The mailman is a real person. His name is Alan Hulton. He seems entirely credible, and he has a story to tell."
Actually Stephen Diamond is more of a conservative anymore, not a liberal. (He's even more of a disgruntled PUMA type that hangs around the formerly sane "NoQuarter") And I have to wonder how the caller got the video interview, since Corsi didn't release it until 19 March 2012…..the same day both Corsi and Cashill's articles appeared.
What's funny though is that Cashill points out that Corsi seems to have led Hulton on.
"Hulton's interviews with Diamond and Corsi are consistent in every major detail save for dates. Hulton suggested to Diamond that the sidewalk meeting took place in the mid-'80s, but Corsi suggests to Hulton that it was in the early 1990s, and Hulton does not correct him. Hulton clearly does not remember the date. If I were to speculate, I would guess 1988, the year Obama started Harvard Law School. Presuming Hulton actually met Obama, the "education" in question would almost surely have been law school."

You know, what amazes me about all this is that the birthers won't believe government records, believe judges are ignorant about the law and the Constitution, are perfectly willing to scream "forgery" at the drop of a hat. But give them a retired postman who claims to have had a conversation 20-30 years ago with no evidence to back it up, and it's somehow simon-pure gospel.

20 March - The Phoenix New Times is also a tad bit dubious about Corsi's latest find.
"Mailman Allen Hulton -- who was only identified as a "retired government employee" at the "birther" press conference -- has taken an oath swearing that Ayers' mother told him about a "foreign, black" student at her home, and that guy with the "unusual foreign sounding name" hinted to him some time in the '90s that he had a "prearranged" presidency.Clearly, Hulton realized in 2008 that this was the one-and-only Barack Hussein Obama.
Remember, this is just part of the evidence that Arpaio has taken in to call for a "bi-partisan congressional investigation," as Arpaio actually thinks the president's birth certificate is about as real as Dolly Parton's chest."
20 March - I can only assume at this point that Joseph Farah is having an extended snit fit over the failure of the Corsi / Arpaio muppet show and the refusal of the real media in this country to take their claims seriously.

The fact that he's claiming to be a member of the "Democrat" party is a red-flag that there's a rat in the woodpile. It's the "Democratic party". Only the right-wing use the "Democrat party" thing.
Particularly when you take a look at the original complaint. (Scribd link here) The term "Democratic party" is never used, and a real member of the Democratic party would have never used the term "Democrat party".
Like I said, I smell a rat.
20 March - Media Matters takes note of Corsi's interview of Allen Hulton.
"If birthers are frustrated that nobody takes them seriously, their latest big story, which is premised on stories told by Bill Ayers' parents' former postman (not a typo), is certainly not going to help matters.In what is probably the biggest mail-related flop since Kevin Costner's The Postman, WorldNetDaily super sleuth and Where's The Birth Certificate? author Jerome Corsi is out with a new report today suggesting the Ayers family paid for "foreigner" Obama's education.
The allegations are based on Corsi's conversations with former USPS postman Allen Hulton, who says that he used to deliver mail to Bill Ayers' parents in a Chicago suburb in the late 80s and early 90s. This should prove to be rock-solid.
According to Hulton and his impressive penchant for remembering decades-old small talk, Bill Ayers' mother once boasted about "this young black student they were helping out, and she referred to him as a foreign student." Hulton also explains that Mary Ayers gave him the student's name, but, as Corsi writes, "it was a 'strange name' that he could not remember, even though at the time it sounded African to him."
Though he couldn't remember the exact student's name, Hulton does "believe she said he was from either Kenya or Indonesia, and I favor Indonesia in my recollection." Uh huh."
20 March - Rep. Cliff Stearns may just be the Representative from Birtherstan.
"Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-FL), the chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, reiterated on Tuesday concerns over whether President Barack Obama had an authentic birth certificate.
“I am, shall we say, looking at all the evidence,” Stearns said, according to The Hill.
He noted that Republican Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Arizona announced in early March that his investigation into Obama’s birth certificate found the document was most likely a “computer-generated forgery.”
“I think we are just going to hold in abeyance a final decision until we hear, you know, some of these people seem to have legitimate concerns, so I don’t think it is unreasonable just to see what they have to say,” Stearns said."

Who is Bettina Viviano anyway?? Well, she's a Producer, with her last movie credit being the Adam Sandler bomb "Jack and Jill" in 2011.
However, she's also a PUMA. She was the Producer/Literary Manager for the never produced PUMA documentary called "We Will Not Be Silenced" She was also interviewed by Sher Zieve at the Pest and eFail on 21 November 2011, where she made the claim:

The Birther Report article seems to have been sourced from an 18 March 2012 article at "PolitiJIm", and taken from a 16 March 2012 interview at "Red, Right, and Blue" blogtalk radio, And it seems both Viviano and "PolitiJim" are believers of the "tinfoil hat PUMA brigade" that believe that Obama was responsible for the deaths of Bill Gwalenty and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones.

Sheriff Joe's display was neither. It was just a rehash of debunked claims, so it was far from creative, and I don't think I need to explain why it was not a work of genius.
