Dispatches from Birtherstan - 19-21 May 2012

In today's dispatches, a white nationalist uses some familiar-sounding names while expressing his desire to assassinate President Obama. Arizona Ken Barnett tries to get the stink of birther off of himself, but between being shown as a liar by the State of Hawaii AND some rather interesting emails, it's starting to be quite clear that he's been been getting booty calls from birthers for a while now.

"Blame the Victim" seems to be the fun new party game, with Rush Limbaugh, Breitbart.com, and Mike Huckabee all playing it. Dr. Orly is threatening elected officials again. Farah's pornstar mustache comes up with a top ten list that, much like the best of birtherstan, has little to do with reality.

Swiftboat liar Jerome Corsi gets even redder in the face while spewing conspiracy nonsense that even Joseph Farah won't buy. Rudy "LoneStar1776" wants people to hear the TRUTH by which he means he's LYING. And if you listen carefully, you can hear the gloves coming off in Mississippi.

10 May - How very charming.

"But it was his talk of violence with other white supremacists and illegal contact with firearms that concerned the FBI the most, testimony and court documents disclose.

In a conversation recorded on Aug. 12, 2010, Kurt referred to President Obama as “Barry Soetoro,” the name used by those in the so-called birther movement who falsely claim the chief executive wasn’t born in the United States and is actually an Indonesian citizen."

Obama has “got no interest in the United States whatsoever other than running us right into the ground,” Kurt says, quickly adding: “He needs to be killed. He needs to be killed.”"

“They’ve got to answer for what they’ve done,” he says on the tapes of informants who have testified against him, “but business first. Take care of business. Got to stop Barry Soetoro from being re-elected. Absolutely.”

Take a good look at your buddies and pals birtherstani. These are the type of people that take your lies and myths and use them to feed their own violent fantasies.

I would say "have you no shame". But in the almost four years I've written about you birthers, I know the answer to that is "no, you have no shame at all."

18 May - Arizona SoS Ken Bennett stamps his little feet and cries "I'm NOT a birther! I'm not I'm not I'm not!!!!"

"Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett just found out the reason why you're putting yourself in a difficult position when you appeal to "birthers" -- people are going to think you're a "birther."

After people caught on to the fact that Bennett told the "birthers" that he was taking the "extra step" to verify President Barack Obama's birth certificate in order for him to appear on Arizona ballots this year, he seems to have received enough questions about it that he's released a public statement declaring his lack of "birther"-ism.

"…I have been on the record since 2009 that I believe the President was born in Hawaii," Bennett says. "I am not a 'birther.'"

And not a few days ago, Bennett was flirting with the birthers, slipping them some tongue, telling them how pretty they looked, slipping his hands down their rears and nibbling on their necks.

And now he's woken up in bed with them. He may have to chew his own arm off to escape.

Hope you used protection Bennett. You're going to have that stink for a while now.

18 May - Fox News affiliate KSAZ-TV in Phoenix chimes in on SoS Ken Bennett's birther flirting.

"An Arizona official says President Barack Obama's listing on the state's election ballot is in question until Hawaii officials say they have a birth certificate for Obama.

Secretary of State Ken Bennett says he asked Hawaii for confirmation under a Hawaii law allowing other states to make such inquiries.

The Hawaii Department of Health says officials are reviewing Bennett's request made in March to decide whether to respond.

Bennett's inquiry follows a flurry of questioning about whether Obama is a natural-born U.S. citizen.

"When Sheriff Arpaio's posse said the birth certificate on the president's website might be fraudulent, I started getting over 1200 emails," Bennett said on Phoenix radio station KFYI.

Hawaii officials have publicly stated they have Obama's birth certificate. The White House released a copy last year.

Bennett told KFYI that he may remove Obama's name from Arizona's ballot without confirmation from Hawaii. He says he also could ask all candidates to submit documentation.

Democrats say what Bennett is doing is ridiculous.

"I think it is Secretary Bennett wasting the public's money and time on a question that has already been answered," said Luis Heredia, Arizona Democratic Party.

Secretary of state Bennett is co-chairman of the Mitt Romney campaign in Arizona."

18 May - SoS Bennett continues to try and get the stink of birther off of him.

In doing so, Bennett, who is co-chairman for Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney's Arizona campaign, has reignited the birther debate coast to coast.

Bennett said he is simply trying to verify the information at the request of a constituent. But critics said it amounts to "political pandering."

Maybe because that's exactly what it is??

"Documents obtained through a public-records inquiry show Bennett's office in early March began communicating with individuals asking the office to look into Obama's birth following an investigation by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio."

Oh what a surprise.

"I was just trying to put this thing to bed and agree to a constituent's request, which I'm allowed to do," Bennett said Friday. "This is a constituent from Arizona, whom I work for. I am the chief elections official, and I am responsible for elections, and I make the list that these people qualify for the ballot."

And the fact that you're Romney's chairman for Arizona has nothing to do with it, right?

"The White House did not respond to requests for comment. The Obama campaign in Arizona, however, released a statement saying the president's name will appear on the ballot.

"Secretary of State Bennett's flirtation with a conspiracy theory that has been debunked time and time again will have no bearing on the election, but it does present an opportunity for Mitt Romney to finally rise to the occasion and denounce the extreme voices in his party," said Mahen Gunaratna, Arizona communications director for Obama for America."

I'm sure Mitt Romney will do exactly that.

18 May - Meanwhile, the brain trust at Breitbart go after another birther myth - the claim he didn't attend Columbia University.

"…because Obama and his campaign have refused to provide other, relevant facts--and because the mainstream media shows such little interest in finding them--conspiracy theories flourish. "

Ah, the "blame the victim" mentality shows up again.

Something the birthers have been unwilling to do since summer of 2008.

19 May - One gets the idea that the State of Hawaii is really freaking fed up with anyone even close to being a birther.

"The attorney general's office in Hawaii is telling Arizona's secretary of state that if he wants confirmation of President Obama's birth records, he'll have to prove he legitimately needs it.

Special Assistant Joshua Wisch said late Friday that Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett hasn't done that despite numerous email and phone exchanges between their offices."

Didn't Ken Bennett say he didn't get any replies from the State of Hawaii??

Gee, wouldn't it be a shame if Hawaiian officials released those emails or they became part of a court record......

"Wisch says Hawaii state laws require Bennett to show legal authority that this office needs the records to update its official lists as part of its ordinary work.

Wisch says as soon as Bennett gives Hawaii adequate authority, the Aloha State will verify Obama's birth."

Somehow I suspect that "pandering to conspiracy minded dolts while being Mitt Romney's state campaign chair" doesn't count as a legitimate need.

19 May - Meanwhile the Obama campaign is telling Arizona "go head and try", according to TPM Livewire.

"Barack Obama’s campaign vowed late Friday that he would be on Arizona’s ballot in November despite threats from the state’s top election official that the president might be blocked over a conspiracy theory about where he was born.

The campaign was responding to comments made by Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who said on Thursday he was not convinced that a copy of the president’s birth certificate was sufficiently authentic to prove Obama was born in the United States and therefore eligible for office. Bennett is planning to run for governor in 2014 and is also the co-chair of Republican Mitt Romney’s campaign in Arizona.

In a statement, Mahen Gunaratna, the Arizona spokesperson for Obama’s campaign said this:

From day one, Mitt Romney has pandered to the far-right of his party, and today Arizona Tea Party Republicans are following suit by questioning where the President was born. The President will be on the ballot this November in Arizona alongside Mitt Romney. And Arizonans will have a choice between a President who brought us back from the brink of another Depression so job loss has been reversed to create 4.2 million private sector jobs, manufacturing is resurgent, and GM is the #1 automaker in the world — and a Governor with a familiar and troubling economic scheme: more budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthy; fewer rules for Wall Street — the same formula that benefitted a few, but crashed our economy and punished the middle class."

19 May - The Washington Post comments on the latest two flurries in birtherstan.

"Never mind that Obama was not exactly an unknown at that point. A year before, an obscure publication known as the New York Times had written about his election as head of the Harvard Law Review, and noted, “His late father, Barack Obama, was a finance minister in Kenya and his mother, Ann Dunham, is an American anthropologist now doing fieldwork in Indonesia. Mr. Obama was born in Hawaii.”

What apparently did happen is something that is not exactly unheard-of in the media business: A junior staffer made a mistake. As ABC News reported,

Miriam Goderich edited the text of the bio; she is now a partner at the Dystel & Goderich agency, which lists Obama as one of its current clients. “This was nothing more than a fact checking error by me--an agency assistant at the time,” Goderich wrote in an emailed statement to Yahoo News. “There was never any information given to us by Obama in any of his correspondence or other communications suggesting in any way that he was born in Kenya and not Hawaii. I hope you can communicate to your readers that this was a simple mistake and nothing more.”

Still, a new myth is born.

All of this, by the way, is part of a Breitbart project to “vet” Obama, as many on the right believe that the media failed to look into his early life when he ran for president.

As this layman sees it, the Misprision of Treason statute requires a person knowing of a treasonous act to report this information to someone in a position of authority to do something about it and in this case it is the voting public that will determine if this usurper can remain in control of this country and continue his transformation of our Constitutional Republic into a Marxist regime more to his liking.
We, the voting public, are the higher authority in this matter and will make that decision, just as the Senate would make this decision if this were an impeachment proceeding against an eligible president. The Republican leadership in the House, by refusing to investigate this matter, is acting as co-conspirators with the treasonous forgers that forged this usurpers eligibility papers to be Commander in Chief of our Military Forces and they are guilty of Misprision of Treason, if not Treason itself, until they do so. In the totality of this failure, I can think of no act that could be more treasonous.
It is time for we patriots to step forward from behind this internet anonymous shield and let these cowards in DC know we are serious and fed up. Hawaii is acting in bad faith and is denying Bennett's request.

Bennett did all he could do, there is simply no way he can allow Obama's name on the ballot. His hands are tied.

Obama has no one to blame but himself. Bennett has already made extra effort on behalf of Obama. What more is he supposed to do?

20 May - At World Nut Daily, Jospeh Farah and his pornstar mustache gives their idea about "why some don't care" about birtherism.

Not surprisingly, the actual reason (namely "because it's a giant flaming pile of bovine byproducts that have no basis in facts, the law, or reality") isn't one of the ten reasons Farah comes up with.

20 May - Arizona Family reports on the State of Hawaii and the fact they did respond to SoS Ken Bennett

"The state of Hawaii has responded to Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett’s request for proof that President Barack Obama was in fact born in the Aloha State.

The Hawaii attorney general’s office has reportedly told Bennett that there are steps he needs to take in order to confirm President Obama’s birth records.

Those steps include Bennett proving that he legitimately needs confirmation in order to update the records at his office."

20 May - The Huffington Post also takes note that the State of Hawaii did indeed respond - repeatedly - to Arizona SoS Ken Bennett's requests.

Ah, Birtherstan. Where one conspiracy-addled racist nut job can say something to another conspiracy-addled racist nut job, and it gets repeated as gospel truth.

21 May - So Arizona SoS Ken Bennett claims he didn't hear anything from the State of Hawaii.

Hmmm…….because TPM Muckraker has just posted the emails between Bennett and Hawaiian State Officials.

"On Monday, TPM filed a public records request for the correspondence between the Hawaii government and the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office. The results show Bennett and his staff grew ever more impatient with the slow pace of Hawaii’s response before the secretary finally took to a local conservative radio talk show on Thursday to voice his concerns.

“Hello Jill. I just left you a brief voice mail message,” Arizona Deputy Secretary of State Jim Drake wrote in an email to a Hawaii attorney on May 1. “I am wondering whether you can give me a ballpark timeframe on our request. As you know, the closer we get to November, the more my phone rings. I believe that having Hawaii’s response on hand might help to quell the inquiries!”

Deputy Attorney General Jill Nagamine’s response? “We need more information to substantiate that you are eligible to receive verification.”

In an interview with the Associated Press late Friday, a spokesman for the Hawaii attorney general said Bennett still has yet to show that he legitimately needs a verification of Hawaii’s birth certificate despite numerous emails back and forth."

So it wasn't so much "didn't hear back from the State of Hawaii", has much as "didn't hear what you wanted from the State of Hawaii".

"Hawaii officials have plenty of reasons to push back. Birtherism is a conspiracy theory fueled by a fringe group of writers and activists unwilling to believe Obama is a natural born citizen and therefore eligible for the presidency no matter how much evidence they get.

The effect is that Hawaii has been overloaded for years with requests for verification of the president’s birth certificate, getting as many as 50 new requests a month. Hawaii officials have passed laws and filed sworn affidavits to deal with the matter. The White House has even gone as far as to release a copy of the president’s long-form birth certificate to the public. Yet requests like Bennett’s still keep coming."

So yeah, wonder why they may be assigning such requests at a lower priority level then, oh, watching paint dry.

"In the interview with the conservative radio host last week in Phoenix, Bennett described himself as “not a birther.” He said he believed the president was born in Hawaii, but he qualified it by adding “or at least I hope he was.” His investigation, he said, wasn’t driven by his personal belief. It began after a flood of emails into his office from birthers in Arizona, asking him to look into the president’s eligibility."

The funny thing is that TPM Muckraker included some emails that Bennett sent birthers. For example, this one to "Tom" (Tom Ballentyne of the Western Center for "Journalism" perhaps??), dated 16 April:

"I have personally met with Representative Seel, Jeff Lichter, and many others on multiple occasions. After considering the various options when we started working on this two or three years ago, I have consistently suggested what I believe is the best action: establishing a special private right of action in state law allowing any Arizona elector to challenge a presidential candidate’s qualification for office under expedited time frames in the courts. Ironically, I think that, after trying several other approaches, that’s what was most recently proposed in the Legislature by Carl."

O RLY??? And notice he said he started working on this with known birthers two or three YEARS ago!

"Additionally, I have asked the State of Hawaii for a “verification in lieu of a certified copy” of the birth record of President Obama, as contemplated under HRS 338-18. This action was prompted, in large part, by constituents here in Arizona who wanted me to do whatever I could to verify the President’s eligibility. If the State of Hawaii does not confirm that he was born in Hawaii, his name will not appear on Arizona ballots."

Sounds like he was making a pretty cut and dried claim here.

Note the cast of characters. Western Center for "Journalism's" Tom Ballantyne. His cameraman Gabe Zolna. And then there's Brian Reilly, Jim Wise, and Jeff Lichter of the Surprise Tea Party, the ones that have been working closely with Joe Arpaio and Jerome Corsi.

I smell Corsi and Farah......

And it speaks volumes that Bennett was citing legal advice and suggestions from this crowd rather than from, oh, I dunno, the Arizona's Attorney General's office??

"Hawaii is bound by their own statutes to provide such verification to other state officials in their official duties and, to Brian’s point, I do not believe they can avoid their duty to me under a criminal investigation loophole because I am not investigating them."

So again, he's not just responding to a birthers demands here, he's working with and is keeping up correspondence with them.

"With all due respect, the MCSO investigation has not proven anything other than raised probable cause that the birth certificate posted on the Whitehouse website “may be” a forgery. The next lawful step would be for the Sheriff’s office to turn their findings over to the County Attorney for prosecution. Evidence would be brought on both sides and a judge should issue a decision. Whether or not that happens, if Hawaii can’t or won’t provide verification of the President’s birth certificate, I will not put his name on the ballot. "

Once again he's stating that, unless Hawaii gives in to HIS demands, he WILL keep President Obama's name off the ballot.

"I can tell from the tone and language of your letters that the only acceptable outcome for you is that his name not be on the ballot, period. That may be what happens…."

So now we know that yes, yes indeed, Arizona SoS Ken Barnnett, Arizona Chairperson for the Mitt Romney campaign, was not only lying about not getting anything from Hawaii, but indeed was and has been pandering to the birtherstani in his state.

He wasn't only nibbling on the birthers necks and calling them pretty, he was actively dry-humping them on the dance floor, groping them under their shirt, and giving them hand-jobs before breaking out the astroglide and going off someplace private for some intimate moments.

Hawaiian officials have minced words about his alleged original birth “document” on file in their birth records but they have never testified in court that the photoshopped document posted on the White House website is the same document that is in their files. The whore Dunham’s sham marriage to a Kenyan Communist named Obama was because the “typical white woman” grandmother was embarrassed that her white trash daughter was having a black bastard due to the daughter’s working in a black whore house. Using the money that she had earned as a prostitute in Hawaii, Barry's mother returned to the State of Washington to be with her trashy high school friends. After Barry’s mother returned to Hawaii, she had a real marriage and her real husband adopted Barry in Indonesia and the State of Hawaii updated the police report record of his birth with a birth certificate showing Barry as the son of an Indonesian and Dunham. Because of the availability of Muslim money and Muslim influence being available for Barry entering elite schools and colleges in America, Barry has never applied to reclaim American citizenship. Proc. 5.2), Taitz seeks sanctions against MDEC Counsel based on her claim that counsel asked the Court to take judicial notice of President Obama’s Long Form Birth Certificate (“LFBC”), which was included as an exhibit to the MDEC’s Motion for Judgment on the Pleadings (“MDEC Motion”) [Docket No. 15] See Motion for Sanctions at 3.(1) Taitz asserts this is sanctionable based on her notion that the LFBC is a forgery."

"1 Taitz had already included a copy of the LFBC – albeit one that was difficult to read - as an exhibit to an exhibit to her First Amended Complaint. See, e.g., Docket No. 1-1 at 69. To the extent Taitz is somehow claiming that she can attach the LFBC as exhibits to her pleadings but other parties are precluded from doing so, her argument is beyond specious and should be soundly rejected."

Nor do such statements have any discernible relevance to the issues presented in this case given that the bulk them consisted of rehashing months’ old – and thoroughly debunked – claims made by self-avowed birther advocates. Further, given that the sheriff’s failure to file any charges or otherwise initiate any sort of actual legal proceedings whatsoever calls into serious question the veracity of the claims he allowed to be publicized from his podium. Therefore, Taitz’s apparent belief that MDEC Counsel were required to accept such information as accurate or as binding upon them in any way is preposterous. Notably, Taitz failed to cite a single case or other legal authority to support her apparent contention otherwise."

"3 While not referenced in her Motion for Sanctions, Taitz filed with her motion an “Orly Taitz for U.S. Senate presents” DVD, seeking donations to her current political campaign for the U.S. Senate in the State of California. See Docket No. 26. Given that (a) the transcript of the hearing reflected in the DVD is already included in the record (see Docket No. 1-1 at 112-157), and (b) the DVD was privately produced rather than any official recording of the proceedings, it is reasonable to conclude that Taitz filed the DVD – like the Motion for Sanctions – for the improper purpose of fundraising and/or increasing publicity for her political campaign."

"8. Third, Taitz’s claim that MDEC Counsel were required to accept the validity of claims made in the affidavits of her purported experts in birth records, forged documents and/or document manipulation is absurd. Mr. Papa’s self-avowed expertise is based on his experience as a web developer who has “often” used software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.” See Papa Affidavit ¶¶ 1-2 [Docket No. 1-1 at 68]. Mr. Vogt’s self-professed expertise is based on his prior ownership of a typesetting company and current ownership of company that sells document scanning equipment and software. See Vogt Affidavit at 1 [Docket No. 1-1 at 71]. More significantly, Taitz’s lack of candor with the Court is appalling. Taitz recently presented these exact affidavits in another one of her legal actions and following a hearing on the merits – in which Taitz presented the affidavits without opposition and elicited direct testimony from Messrs Papa and Vogt regarding their findings with neither objections nor cross-examination – the administrative law court (appropriately) found their testimony to be worthless to Taitz’s claims:"

Given that the information even potentially relevant to the LFBC upon which Taitz’s Motion for Sanctions relies has already been presented and flatly rejected as worthless in a virtually identical legal proceeding – a material fact that Taitz most assuredly knew as she was both counsel and purported witness in that proceeding yet withheld that fact from this Court – Taitz’s claim that MDEC Counsel were required to accept such information as true, or were in any way bound to act on such information is ludicrous. Again, Taitz has not cited any legal authority to support her charges of any improper actions allegedly undertaken by MDEC counsel; her sole basis for seeking motions is her assertion that “evidence” she submitted elsewhere proved anything other than the frivolity of her birther claims. As such, Taitz’s Motion for Sanctions based upon such wholly unsupported argument should be DENIED."

"11. MDEC Counsel is indeed “well aware” of Taitz’s litigious history. However, counsel is at a loss as to how, exactly, knowledge of such history is relevant to her Motion for Sanctions. If anything, such knowledge demonstrates the utter frivolity of her claims, her increasingly vexatious litigation practice, and her persistent pattern of seeking to mislead the courts before whom she appears, either as counsel, litigant, or both, sometimes with clients and sometimes with “co-plaintiffs.”"

I swear I can hear Dr. Orly screaming from all the way up here in Washington State.

"13. Therefore, while Taitz is apparently of the view that MDEC Counsels’ awareness of her repeated failures in other venues should somehow prevent them from taking certain positions in this case, reality compels the opposite conclusion. The reasonableness of MDEC Counsels’ position becomes manifest upon review of the wholesale, consistent rejection of her claims in other courts around the country. As such, Taitz’s Motion for Sanctions based upon such a frivolous argument should be DENIED"

What's fun is that Hawaii isn't just asking Bennett to show what authority he has to demand verification. They're also asking exactly what list he's updating, and whether he's updating all the names on the list or not. I suspect that's part of what's giving Bennett fits.
