"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes--and ships--and sealing-wax--
Of cabbages--and kings--
And why the sea is boiling hot--
And whether pigs have wings."
- The Walrus and the Carpenter
Alice Through the Looking-Glass, Lewis Carroll
On 2 August 2008, I penned part one of what was to be a three part article on the "Cult of the COLB", a group of people who originally wanted Sen. Barack Obama to show his birth certificate because of a claim his real middle name was "Muhammed".
It went to five parts in the short time I started it, including claims of forgery, foreign birth, supposed experts, and other insanity.
Five years later, and that article has grown. Or mutated one might say. Metastasized might even be a better description. For five long years I've seen a continued slide into insanity. I've seen naked racism and bald-faced lies. I've seen attempts to rewrite the Constitution and retroactively redefine citizenship. I've seen fake grand juries, fake trials, and so-called "patriots" with questionable and/or criminal backgrounds. I've seen people so consumed by hatred that they've thrown away their lives, their careers, their good name, and their honor.
All because they couldn't stomach the very idea that a tall skinny well-spoken and intelligent African-American was elected, not once but twice, to be the President of the United States.
Calls for secession. Calls for armed revolt. Calls for military coups. Calls to overthrow the US government, and every single thing this country stands for. To call for one party rule, and the disenfranchisement, if not expulsion and/or genocide, of an entire political party, simply because they can't stand the idea of an "uppity darkie" in the White House.
I've seen all that in five years and more. I've been cursed at, threatened, had people call for my death, and fake "trials" against me, all because I dared to speak truth to lies, and to shine a light on the darkness that has consumed the souls of what has become known as the "birthers".
I've had trolls spread blatant and bald-faced lies about myself, my family, my friends, and just about anything else they could think of.
And I've seen birtherism sputter into an increasingly petty and juvenile tussle as Dr. Orly and her partisans battle the World Net Daily-connected crowd for the remaining birther bucks. I've seem people abandon birtherism for straight up conspiracy theories and naked racism.
And let's look at the last five years. When this started boiling over, Philip Berg was top of the proto-birther dung heap, and all the various copy-cats cribbed off his lawsuits. Now he's disbarred, most birthers ignore him or mock him, and he's mostly known for his lawsuit against Dr. Orly.
And Dr. Orly herself?? How the "Queen of the Birthers" has fallen. Used to be she had a lawsuit a month almost, and now she's desperately trying to flog the few remaining, and parroting every far-right conspiracy theory out there in a desperate attempt to say "Look at me! Look at me!!"
Jerome Corsi has quit the field. "Texas Darlin" has quit the field. Stephen Pidgeon has quit the field. Sharon Rondeau has been reduced to repeating stuff from other birthers and acting as Walter Fitzpatrick's sounding board. Fitzpatrick himself has done nothing more than land himself and other birthers into jail. Terry Lakin nuked his own career and future for nothing.
The "American Grand Jury" movement turned out to be a resounding dud. The De Vattelists are still out there, but nobody outside of most birthers take them seriously. Dr. Kate went from being a PUMA to repeating anti-semitic and racist slanders and conspiracy theories about chemtrails and the like.
And the "experts". Does anyone outside of "Free Republic" take Ronald Polland / Polarik seriously anymore? Certainly nobody outside of most birthers take Paul Irey, Mara Zebest, and their like seriously. Lawrence Sellin went from being an AP expert to writing the same thing over and over for little-known and read blogs.
And the rest?? Most remaining birther blogs are almost indistinguishable from "Stormfront" or other White Nationalist boards. The court cases have been an unbroken string of birther failure.
The WND-funded "Cold Case Posse" is being ran by the equivalent of a Mall Cop, not exactly showing anything like importance. And how many times can Carl Gallups and Mike Zullo play the "any day now" card before they become the birthers who cried wolf?
Even the most birther friendly politicians are willing to do more than flirt with them. Their attempt at birther bills failed. The birther ballot challenges failed. Every attempt to try and make sure President Obama was "one and done", failed.
Donald Trump, Victoria Jackson, and Pat Boone all tried to go birther, and became punchlines to bad jokes as a result. Ted Nugent seems to be willing to follow their footsteps.
Five years of chronic, unbroken failure.
It's been an interesting five years. I've met some wonderful and fascinating people along the way. I've made people laugh, and smile, and roll their eyes. I've improved my writing skills and sharpened my wit. I've seen a lot of good along with the evil of birtherism.

Five years ago I didn't know what a "Sovereign CItizen" was. I didn't know many of the creeds of the White Nationalist movement. I didn't know many of the conspiracy theories and claims out there. I didn't know how a mind seeped in conspiracy and fear would think, plan, react, and see the world around them.
I do know now. To my regret at times, I do know now.
- "The Art of War", Sun Tzu
Being a political blogger has been an interesting experience, as is documenting the emergence of a whole new conspiracy theory and watching it integrate itself into existing ones.
But the cost has been that I'm not doing movie reviews or other writing. And quite frankly, the attacks and death threats I've gotten have worn on me after a while.
Simply put, I'm burned out. The stupid has gone on too long, and when I stare into the abyss, the face that stares back is starting to look familiar. Enough is enough.
This chapter of my life is now closed.
Oh, I know the birthers will continue on. They don't have much choice but to fight a hopeless battle. Five years of "….any day now…." should have convinced them that that day will never arrive. And so they will continue to fight. Even after 20 January 2017, when President Obama leaves the White House after completeling his second and final term, they will still be demanding the "Magic Reset Button" that will undo the past eight years. When Former President Obama opens his Presidential Library, Dr. Orly and other die-hards will be there protesting, screaming "fraud" and "usurper". And they will look even more pathetic and foolish than they do now.
Personally I would be surprised if we see much more than the occasional flair up of birtherism between now and then. They're too busy fighting among themselves and playing attention whores to be able to organize an orgy in a whore house, much less a revolt against a legitimately elected President of the United States.
And I will sit on the sidelines, with a diet root beer or a good microbrew IPA, and I will smile. And I will laugh. And I will continue on with the joy and peace and wonder that is my life. I will enjoy those family, those friends and those I love that continue to be such a special wonder and joy in my life and heart. I'll go ride my motorcycle trike, explore roads and history, and never forget the beauty that is the world.
I'll spin off the bad movie reviews and recipes, along with some non-birther commentary, into a new blog. Where I will use my sense of humor and gift of snark on bad movies, pop culture, and odd recipes. For those who care, welcome and enjoy. For those who go elsewhere, have a wonderful life.
As for the birthers, all of those who have made my life so extra……."special" in the last five years. May you harvest exactly what your actions and deeds have planted.
