At the intersection of bad movies and questionable politics, of horrid acting and insane conspiracies, lie Bad Fiction, the writings and rants of a 40-something screaming moderate with a taste for B movies.
On 2 August 2008, I posted my first article on what was then called the "Cult of the COLB" and later were known as "Birthers".
As I said a year later, I should have run screaming when I had the chance. And if you needed proof that I'm not funded by George Soros, the White House, the Gnomes of Zurich, or the Bavarian Illuminati, the fact that I've made just enough from this blog to take my family out to dinner once or twice in those four years, should be a tip off.
If George Soros wants to give me a freaking vacation and overdue hazardous duty pay, he can fly right on at it. Because I bloody well NEED one. I've gazed into the abyss so often I'm getting worried about what may be looking back at me.
When I first started debunking these twitwaffles, I thought for sure it was a cute little campaign smear, easily debunked and refuted.
Well, I got the easily debunked and refuted part right. What I didn't expect was the sheer level of bile and hatred. I didn't expect people like Dr. Orly to go on with it like a meth-crazed energizer bunny. I didn't expect Joseph Farah to buy a sheriff's office to give a thin veneer of respectability to it. I didn't expect an entire cadre of people who's obsession with President Obama's birth certificate may be due to the fact their birth certificates are letters of apology from the condom factory.
I didn't expect that after almost 150 lawsuits ALL ENDING IN CASE DISMISSED OR DENIED, that they would STILL be at it.
Okay, I still had some faith in humanity, what can I say?
Four years ago I didn't know about "sovereign citizens". Militia groups were something I read out in the news. My legal knowledge was thankfully limited. I avoided racist blogs and websites out of sheer disgust. I never once got a death threat. I thought that State bars actually gave a rats ass about enforcing ethics rules against attorneys.
Four years ago I didn't think I would ever see the level of open disrespect I've seen shown the President of the United States. I didn't think I would see an entire political party abandon even the pretense of non-partisanship. I didn't think I would ever see political discourse in this country poisoned to the level it has become.
I'm four years older now and a lot more cynical and disgusted. The birthers and their kin have shown a dark and fetid part of the American soul, and I refuse to let them destroy the country, the Constitution, and everything we're supposed to stand for, simply because they can't get over their paranoid terror and blind hatred towards the President.
In four years, there's been a lot of sewage and toxic waste spewed from the birtherstani. I've seen fake "grand juries", fake trials, fake "citizens arrests" and altogether too many people just slobbering over the chance to see the President of the United States (and his family) in front of a firing squad or hanging from a tree.
There's a handful of people who have spent that time showing the sewage for what it is. To that handful, I give thanks. I've met some amazing people among my fellow debunkers.
To the birthers, as you sow, so shall you reap. May your reward be exactly what your actions deserve.
The last week or so I've seen a lot of people ragging on Apple over the factory conditions at Foxconn in China, who Apple contracts to do much of their production.
I'm just wondering how many of the people who are bashing Apple and swearing they'll never buy an Apple product have anything by Acer, ASUS, Cisco, Netgear, Lenovo (or Dell. Do they have a Nintendo DS or Wii?? What about a Microsoft XBox 360?? Sony laptop. playstation, or PSP?? Do they have an Amazon Kindle or Barns and Noble Nook?? What about anything from IBM or HP? Do they have Intel Inside?? Do they have a Motorola, Sony Ericsson or Nokia mobile phone? What about a Panasonic or Sharp TV, DVD, or laptop? A Vizio monitor??
If the answer to any of those is "yes", then congratulations. You're using a product more than likely ALSO made by Foxconn, in the exact same factories and conditions that Apple products are made in.
Wouldn't it make more sense, rather than ragging on one company, to hold ALL of them to task for the conditions their contractors maintain? Or is it simply easier to lash out at one particular company and ignore the rest?
Now a little bit of back history. A few months ago, there was a young child in Colorado. Biologically male, however self-identifies as female. Said child wanted to participate in Girl Scouts. At first the local council said no, and later reversed this decision.
This caused some backlash, with a couple troops at religious-based schools dissolving their troops and going with an off-shoot group called "American Heritage Girls", described as:
"…a group organized in 1995 in protest to the Girl Scouts' decision to allow scouts to replace the word "God" in scout teachings with a word representing a personal image of God, such as a "higher being," "Allah" or "Buddha.
The newer group proclaims Jesus Christ as Lord, limits membership to girls and works to disciple girls as Christians."
I'm fighting a case of tonsillitis that's spread into my ears right now. I have an attention span roughly equal to a flashbulb's, and no patience to wade though birtherstan right now.
In the meantime, might I recommend someplace more important than birtherstan? There are people in Missouri and Oklahoma (not to mention along the Mississippi River) who could use all the help they can get.
Hello high school! How's it going? And my classmates, how are you doing?
Oh, I know it's been a few decades, so you don't know who I am. Here's a hint.
I'm the quiet, shy bookish nerdy one. The one with glasses. The one who liked to spend time in the library and in the business lab with the teletypes and DECwriters learning BASIC. The guy in JROTC. The one taking aeronautics instead of shop.
You know, your punching bag.
I was the one who you pushed around.
I was the one who you dumped ink into their locker.
I'm the one who you slashed his bicycle tires so often that I had to get solid tires instead.
I was the one you punched out for no reason.
I was the one you constantly called "fag", "queer", "homo", "gay". Not because I was mind you, but because you THOUGHT I was. And that was good enough for you all, right? Just the suspicion of being Gay was enough for you.
Does that refresh your memory schoolmates? What about my teachers, staff, and faculty members of my high school?
I'm the one who you kept silent on when you saw me being bullied.
I'm the one who you told to "just get along" when I reported being bullied.
